There are certain football shirt designs that simply never seem to go out of fashion.
Hoops are surely one of them.
Genoa have stepped away from their traditional half-and-half for the club’s 133rd birthday, with Kappa producing a shirt that dives straight into the maritime and British history behind Italy’s oldest existing football club.
Deep red and blue hoops dominate the design, colours originally embraced by the club’s British founders and carrying the sort of traditional athletic aesthetic associated with the era.
There’s also something distinctly seafaring about the finished look. Simple, bold horizontal bands feel perfectly at home with the maritime story Genoa are telling.
Then there’s Il Grifone.
Rather than the complete Genoa crest, the famous griffin flies solo across the chest in gold, standing out beautifully against those deep red and blue hoops. It’s a small change that gives the shirt considerably more character.
The Union Jack on the neck completes the connection to the club’s origins without needing to dominate the design.
It’s also a reminder of just how effective horizontal stripes can be. No complicated pattern is required here. The hoops themselves are the design.
So who does horizontal stripes best in football?
Celtic? QPR? Flamengo? Sporting? Someone else entirely?
Genoa have certainly made a strong case for joining the conversation.
