An ancient Greek god, a forgotten monogram from 1904 and a journey that changed a football club forever. Ezeta’s first international collection has given Apollon Smyrnis three shirts built around its remarkable history.
There are football clubs whose histories are inseparable from the cities they represent. Then there is Apollon Smyrnis, a club whose story begins in a city that is no longer part of the country in which it plays.
Founded in Smyrna, now Izmir in modern-day Turkey, in 1891, Apollon began life as a cultural and musical society established by members of the city’s Greek community.
Football came later.
Following the catastrophe that engulfed Smyrna in 1922 and the displacement of its Greek population, Apollon found a new home in Athens. The club survived, carrying its name, colours and cultural identity into a new chapter.
Now, 135 years after its foundation, Italian manufacturer Ezeta has taken that history as the starting point for an ambitious three-shirt collection for 2026/27.
It is also a significant moment for Ezeta itself, marking the brand’s first official club partnership outside Italy.

A Greek Story Told Through Design
Rather than producing three unrelated designs, Ezeta has developed a shared visual language across the collection.
Ancient Greek decorative forms, classical architecture and symbols associated with Apollo have all influenced the artwork.
Look closely and the patterns incorporate waves, suns, lions, botanical forms and traditional meanders.
These aren’t simply decorative additions. They connect the collection to Greek artistic traditions, including motifs that were subsequently reinterpreted in the neoclassical architecture of 19th-century Athens.
The choice of Apollo is particularly appropriate.
In Greek mythology, Apollo is associated with music, poetry and the arts, providing a connection to the cultural society from which the club originally emerged.
Each shirt interprets these references differently, giving the collection three distinct identities.
Home Shirt: The Blue and White of Greek Identity
The home shirt remains faithful to Apollon’s traditional blue-and-white stripes.
The blue takes inspiration from the Greek national flag, reflecting an identity that has remained central to the club since its foundation in Smyrna.
Within the white stripes, Ezeta has incorporated the collection’s intricate decorative pattern.
The blue stripes feature the anthemion, a classical ornamental design combining stylised palmettes and lotus flowers, commonly associated with ancient Greek art and architecture.
It’s a thoughtful approach to a traditional striped shirt.
Rather than allowing the artwork to overwhelm the familiar colours, Ezeta has integrated it into the established design.
The result is recognisably Apollon Smyrnis, with the historical references providing an additional layer of detail.

Third Shirt: A Forgotten Symbol From 1904
Perhaps the most intriguing historical detail appears on the black-and-gold third shirt.
During its research, Ezeta discovered an old Apollon monogram in a club programme dating back to 1904.
More than 120 years later, that symbol has returned.
The monogram appears prominently on the chest and is repeated across the shoulders, accompanied by subtle ornamental patterns.
Black and gold give the shirt an entirely different character from the traditional home design, while the decorative elements reference the elegance of classical heraldry.
It’s an especially interesting piece of kit design because the central feature isn’t a newly invented symbol.
It is something recovered from the club’s own history.
For a team that has experienced displacement, relocation and generations of change, reviving an emblem from its earliest years carries particular significance.
It connects the modern club in Athens with the institution that existed in Smyrna long before the events of 1922.

Away Shirt: Pink, Apollo and the Freedom to Be Different
The away shirt takes the collection in a more contemporary direction.
Pink is the dominant colour, contrasting with blue detailing and the same family of decorative motifs found throughout the other designs.
Apollo remains a central feature, accompanied by classical geometry and ornamental artwork.
According to Ezeta, the unconventional colour choice represents the club’s independent spirit.
It’s an interesting contrast to the home and third shirts.
Where the home design celebrates the club’s traditional identity and the third revives an overlooked piece of its history, the away shirt allows Ezeta to experiment more freely.
The three designs therefore have different roles, without losing their visual connection to one another.

A Major Step for Ezeta
The collection also marks an important development for the Italian manufacturer.
Ezeta has established a reputation for working with clubs whose identities offer opportunities for distinctive, culturally informed designs.
Its previous work with Sorrento Calcio, for example, drew inspiration from the sirens of local mythology.
Apollon Smyrnis takes that approach beyond Italy for the first time.
The brand has chosen a club with a history extending well beyond football, allowing its designers to explore Greek cultural identity, classical art and a remarkable journey from Smyrna to Athens.
It’s a fitting partnership for a manufacturer that increasingly treats shirt design as an opportunity to investigate the places and institutions behind the teams.
More Than an Anniversary Collection
Football shirt manufacturers frequently refer to heritage, tradition and identity when explaining their latest releases.
Sometimes those references amount to little more than an attractive pattern and a few lines of marketing.
The Apollon Smyrnis collection has something more substantial behind it.
The club’s origins as a musical society, its displacement from Smyrna, the survival of its Greek identity and the rediscovery of a 1904 monogram all provide genuine historical foundations for the designs.
The shirts won’t appeal equally to everyone. Some will prefer the traditional stripes, others the bold pink away design or the more restrained black-and-gold third.
But taken together, they form a coherent collection that celebrates a club whose story began long before football became its defining activity.
For Ezeta’s first international partnership, it’s an ambitious introduction.
And for Apollon Smyrnis, it’s another way of keeping 135 years of history visible.
