Football and art have crossed paths plenty of times before.
Usually, the shirt becomes the canvas.
One Knoxville have taken a slightly different route.

Inspired by acclaimed modernist painter Beauford Delaney, one of Knoxville’s most influential artistic figures, this latest release feels less like artwork printed onto a football shirt and more like an attempt to weave his style throughout every element of the design.

The most obvious example is the colour palette. The various greens, alongside flashes of yellow and orange, immediately recall the energetic brushwork and vibrant use of colour found throughout Delaney’s paintings. Rather than relying on a single graphic or illustration, the influence is spread across the entire identity of the kit.
The badge is perhaps where that approach works best. Up close, it almost resembles a miniature painting in its own right, packed with texture and colour that stands apart from a conventional football crest.

The patterning follows suit, running throughout the shirt rather than being confined to one panel or feature. It creates a busy visual, although whether that feels expressive or overwhelming may depend on what you’re looking for in a football kit.

That’s perhaps the most interesting question here.
When a club sets out to honour an artist, should the result feel like a wearable artwork, or should it remain first and foremost a football shirt?
One Knoxville have clearly leaned towards the former.
What elevates the project beyond aesthetics alone is the purpose behind it. Created in partnership with the Beck Cultural Exchange Center, the initiative aims to raise funds towards the restoration of Delaney’s ancestral home, giving the shirt a direct connection to preserving the legacy it celebrates.

That context arguably makes the design more compelling than any individual pattern or colour choice.
The kit isn’t simply inspired by Beauford Delaney.
It’s attempting to contribute to his story as well.
