Indonesia’s oldest football club has turned back the clock for its 111th anniversary, unveiling two special Adidas shirts that bring vintage styling, a historic crest and a particularly striking champagne-gold design back into the spotlight.
Not every football club gets to celebrate its 111th birthday, and PSM Makassar have certainly made the most of theirs. The Indonesian side, founded on 2 November 1915, have unveiled a pair of limited-edition Adidas shirts for the 2026/27 season, drawing inspiration from the club’s past while delivering two designs that look every bit as appealing today.

The anniversary collection, introduced under the theme Rise Together, consists of a traditional maroon home shirt and a champagne-gold alternative, both featuring the Adidas Trefoil and a return to PSM’s historic badge. There’s a clear influence from the club’s 1984/85 era, although these aren’t simply two identical recreations. Each shirt approaches the retro theme differently, with the result being one of the more interesting anniversary collections we’ve seen this season.

A Maroon Throwback to the Mid-1980s
The home shirt is the more traditional of the pair, revisiting the maroon-and-white pinstriped appearance associated with PSM Makassar’s 1984/85 Adidas jersey. Thin white vertical lines run across the rich maroon base, complemented by darker tonal detailing within the fabric and Adidas’ familiar three stripes across the shoulders.

It’s a particularly satisfying combination because very little feels forced. The pinstripes give the shirt character without overwhelming the traditional colours, while the white Trefoil provides exactly the sort of finishing touch that makes a vintage-inspired Adidas release so appealing. The return of the historic club crest strengthens that impression, giving the shirt a connection to generations of supporters who remember an earlier visual identity.
The BOSOWA sponsorship remains prominent across the chest, but its white presentation works neatly with the rest of the design. Rather than competing with the pinstripes, it helps maintain a consistent appearance, allowing the shirt to retain the simplicity that makes its historical inspiration so effective.

The Champagne-Gold Shirt Might Be Even Better
As appealing as the maroon home shirt is, the champagne-gold alternative arguably steals the show. It’s a considerably bolder interpretation of the retro theme, pairing a warm golden base with a central maroon stripe surrounded by repeating white diamond shapes.
The pattern gives the shirt an unmistakably vintage appearance without looking like a straightforward reproduction of an old design. Maroon Adidas shoulder stripes, coordinated sleeve cuffs and a fold-over collar complete the look, creating something that feels closer to a carefully considered heritage release than a conventional modern away shirt.

What makes the design particularly effective is the balance between its colours. The champagne base gives the shirt an understated elegance, while the maroon and white geometric detailing provides enough contrast to make the central pattern stand out. There’s a richness to the combination that makes this the more distinctive of the two releases, and potentially the one that attracts collectors beyond PSM’s own supporter base.

Both shirts also benefit from the decision to restore the club’s classic crest, an emblem associated with PSM’s history rather than the badge used on their regular contemporary shirts. It’s a small detail with considerable significance, particularly for an anniversary collection intended to celebrate more than a century of football in Makassar.
More Than Just an Anniversary Release
Founded in 1915 as Makassarche Voetbalbond, PSM Makassar have a history stretching back to the Dutch colonial period and are widely recognised as Indonesia’s oldest surviving football club. The club’s 111th anniversary is therefore a celebration of an institution that has remained part of Indonesian football through enormous changes in the country and the sport itself.
These shirts have also been created for more than a commemorative photoshoot. PSM have confirmed that the limited-edition collection is intended for use during the 2026/27 I.League Cup, giving supporters an opportunity to see the historic styling return to the pitch.
That matters. Anniversary shirts can sometimes feel disconnected from the football they’re supposed to celebrate, particularly when they’re released purely as collector’s items. Bringing these designs into competitive matches gives the collection a stronger connection to the club’s present while acknowledging its past.
Two Shirts Worth Celebrating
There’s always a risk that anniversary collections lean too heavily on nostalgia, relying on an old badge and a familiar manufacturer logo to generate excitement. PSM Makassar have avoided that by producing two shirts with genuinely different personalities.
The maroon home design is a respectful nod to the club’s mid-1980s appearance, built around simplicity, pinstripes and traditional colours. The champagne-gold alternative takes a more adventurous approach, combining geometric detailing with a colour palette that feels both elegant and unmistakably retro.
If we had to choose one, the champagne shirt would narrowly take it. The maroon design is a beautifully executed throwback, but there’s something particularly appealing about the golden alternative’s combination of colour, pattern and vintage styling.
For a club celebrating 111 years of history, it’s a fitting way to mark the occasion. Two shirts that recognise the past without feeling trapped in it, and a reminder of just how effective football kit design can be when the historical references are given room to shine.
Which would you choose: the traditional maroon pinstripes or the champagne-gold alternative?
