There has been plenty of nostalgia around football shirts recently, from Santos bringing back their 1997 Umbro look to Genoa celebrating their history with a special 133rd anniversary shirt. Atalanta are the latest to delve into the archives, although this time it is the badge taking centre stage.

Atalanta and New Balance have gone all the way back to 1963, reviving a historic version of the club crest featuring La Dea in her full-stride form.
The Greek goddess Atalanta herself is probably more familiar to modern supporters in profile, with her distinctive head and flowing hair forming one of Italian football’s most recognisable badges. Seeing the full figure return, contained within the period shield, gives the shirt a completely different character.
It is also a good example of why clubs do not necessarily need to recreate an entire old shirt to produce an effective throwback.
The kit itself is deliberately restrained. A predominantly beige base is interrupted by small touches of Atalanta blue, leaving the historic crest as the obvious focal point.
Well, almost.
The enormous red Lete sponsor is certainly putting up a fight for your attention.
Still, there is something particularly satisfying about seeing an old football badge returned to a modern shirt without being unnecessarily redesigned or reinterpreted. Atalanta had more than 120 years of visual history to explore, and reaching back to this particular identity gives the release a genuine reason to exist.
Which football club has the best historic badge that deserves to make a comeback?
