We’re calling it. When it comes to football kits, Augsburg are the best-dressed club in Germany.
Season after season they find ways of digging into the city’s identity and turning it into something genuinely worth wearing. Add Mizuno into the equation and the partnership simply does not seem to miss.
The latest third shirt is another example.
Augsburg was once a major centre of Germany’s textile industry, and the club have headed back into that history for inspiration, focusing on the Weberhaus, the original weavers’ Guild House.
It’s quite the building.
Its richly painted façade is filled with geometric forms, patterns and decoration, providing plenty for Augsburg and Mizuno to work with. Appropriately, a building connected so closely to the textile trade has now provided the basis for a new piece of textile itself.
The recreated Weberhaus exterior becomes an all-over pattern across the shirt, and the balance is spot on. There’s plenty happening when you look closely, but from a distance it remains remarkably clean.
That’s not always easy with an all-over print.
Deep green provides the connection back to Augsburg’s traditional colours, while the collar and cuffs have deliberately been kept simple. Even that single button adds just enough without competing with the pattern.
Launching it within the State Textile and Industry Museum only completes the story.
It’s another Augsburg shirt that feels specific to Augsburg, rather than a design that could have been handed to almost anyone.
There are obviously some enormous clubs producing shirts in Germany.
None are doing it better than Augsburg for us.
