A burst of spirit.

Red and white stripes belong to some serious football clubs. Sunderland, Southampton, Athletic Club, Atlético Madrid, PSV, Brentford, Sheffield United, Olympiacos and plenty more have made the combination their own.

So how do you do something different without losing the identity altogether?

LR Vicenza and Hummel have found a neat solution.

The familiar vertical stripes remain, but rather than simply travelling straight down the shirt, they begin to radiate outwards from the bottom. The effect is designed to capture the energy and enthusiasm of Vicenza’s famously passionate Curva Sud.

It’s only a relatively small shift from the traditional formula, but that’s often all a striped home shirt needs.

Alas, stripes rarely continue down the back

We’ve seen Real Betis and Hummel play a similar game with tradition this season, interrupting their famous green and white stripes with a diagonal treatment:

SPAL and Erreà took another route entirely, keeping their light blue and white identity intact while working the architecture of Ferrara directly into the stripes:

Vicenza’s version is less about adding something into the stripes and more about changing their movement. They spread across the shirt almost like a burst of energy, bringing the Curva Sud inspiration into the design without needing an enormous graphic to explain it.

You know what else caught our eye, though.

That badge.

The famous R has been given a beautifully embossed treatment, physically standing proud from the shirt as well as visually dominating it. After recently discussing AS Nancy Lorraine going enormous with their historic thistle, we’re developing quite the appreciation for clubs having a bit of fun with their crests.

Sometimes the badge deserves to be one of the main attractions.

The real debate here, though, is much bigger.

Who does red and white stripes best?

Not necessarily the best shirt this season. Which club simply owns that combination for you?

Athletic Club? Atlético? Sunderland? Southampton? PSV? Brentford? Sheffield United? Vicenza?

There can only be one.
