A special night, remembered 50 years on. One club honouring another.
A maiden voyage into European competition is always going to live long in the memory. When it remains your only European campaign to date, the significance only grows.
For Cesena, that journey began in Magdeburg.
The Italian side travelled to face FC Magdeburg in the UEFA Cup in 1976, marking Cesena’s first ever competitive European fixture. The result didn’t go their way, and a valiant effort in the return wasn’t quite enough to rescue the tie, but half a century later it remains a source of enormous pride.
Now Cesena have gone back.

Their new Macron third kit pays homage not only to the occasion, but to the club that welcomed them that night.

The rich, bright blue immediately takes Cesena away from their familiar black and white and into territory unmistakably associated with FC Magdeburg. Two stripes run vertically down the shirt, positioned away from the centre to create a slightly vintage look without turning the design into a straight recreation.
Even the Amadori sponsor has played along, shifting across the shirt rather than cutting through the stripes. It’s a little detail, but one that allows the design to work as intended.
It’s another very different look from Cesena and Macron after the black and gold away shirt we featured recently:
That shirt looked into Cesena’s own visual history through Piero Gratton’s famous Cavalluccio. This one remembers the club through somebody else’s colours.
That’s what makes the story particularly interesting.

Football shirts constantly celebrate anniversaries, former players, trophies and historic designs. It’s considerably less common to see one club effectively honour another club through its kit.
We saw another interpretation of that idea when San Francisco Glens looked towards Celtic’s legendary Lisbon Lions for their own commemorative collection:
Cesena’s connection is completely different. They didn’t beat Magdeburg. They didn’t lift a trophy there. In purely sporting terms, the trip ended in disappointment.
Yet the occasion itself mattered enough that 50 years later, the opposition and their colours have become part of Cesena’s own story.
There’s something rather nice about that.
Would you be happy for your club to wear another team’s colours to honour a shared piece of history?
For Cesena, blue represents one European night they’ll never forget.
Hopefully it won’t be their last.
