The boys no longer.

Well, they’re still Young Boys, of course, but the women’s side of the Swiss club are stepping out from the shadow of the men’s shirts with something entirely their own.

For the first time in the club’s history, BSC Young Boys Frauen have unveiled an exclusive third shirt, and what a way to make an entrance.

A rich purple, gilded gold and a little creative input from the players themselves.

There’s plenty to celebrate here.

Created by Nike, the new shirt moves away from the familiar yellow and black associated with Young Boys.

Instead, a beautifully rich purple dominates, accompanied by golden detailing that gives the whole thing an unmistakably luxurious appearance.

There’s a subtle geometric pattern woven through the fabric, adding depth without distracting from the colours.

The Nike Swoosh and Young Boys crest both receive the gold treatment, standing out beautifully against the purple background.

A bold fold-over collar provides the finishing touch, giving the shirt a classic appearance that suits the rest of the design.

Purple wasn’t chosen simply because it looks good alongside gold.

The colour has long been associated with equality and self-determination, making it a particularly appropriate choice for a team establishing its own visual identity.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the entire project, however, is who helped make the decisions.

Representatives from the women’s squad were involved in selecting the design, giving the players a genuine say in what they’ll be wearing.

It’s a relatively simple idea, but an important distinction between creating something for a team and creating something with them.

The launch photography adds another layer of prestige.

Shot inside Bern’s historic Erlacherhof, the official residence of the city’s mayor, the campaign places the players amongst ornate interiors and grand architectural surroundings.

It’s a fitting location, particularly as the building also hosted celebrations following Young Boys Women’s 2024/25 league title success.

The result is a launch that gives the shirt and the occasion the attention they deserve.

We’ve been enjoying this growing movement in women’s football, with clubs increasingly giving their teams bespoke shirts, distinct identities and dedicated launch campaigns.

Napoli Women recently unveiled an entirely new identity, drawing on the mythology of Naples and the legendary Siren Parthenope:

Their away shirt subsequently took that story all the way to the Moon:

Young Boys have taken a different approach, retaining their established club crest while introducing colours and a design chosen specifically for the women’s team.

It brings us back to an increasingly relevant question.

Should women’s football teams have their own exclusive shirts, or should they wear the same designs as the men’s teams?

There’s certainly something appealing about a shared club identity, but projects like this demonstrate the creative possibilities when women’s teams are given the opportunity to develop something of their own.

Young Boys have delivered a lovely first effort, with the players themselves helping shape the outcome.

A purple and gold beginning to what we hope becomes a lasting tradition.
