Adidas, Nike and Puma might dominate the biggest stages, but Macron are putting together quite the catalogue of their own.
Armenia’s latest home and away shirts provide another example, taking centuries of Armenian manuscript artistry and bringing it onto the national stage.
The home is the real showstopper.
Deep red provides the base for an intricate embossed pattern inspired by Armenia’s decorative manuscript tradition, including the remarkable Trchnagir, or bird script, where letters could become illustrations in their own right.
It’s exactly the sort of history that lends itself beautifully to a football shirt.
The pattern interlocks across almost the entire surface, while gold provides the perfect accompaniment. Those golden birds running down the sides are a particularly neat touch, carrying the manuscript inspiration beyond the main pattern.
There’s plenty to enjoy with the away too.
A crisp white base keeps things much simpler, allowing the geometric band running through the national crest to become the focus. Filled with colour and pattern, it offers another interpretation of the decorative traditions found within Armenian manuscripts.
Launching the collection at the Mesrop Mashtots Matenadaran, home to an extraordinary collection of ancient manuscripts, ties everything together.
This is exactly what we want from international shirts. Something that could only really belong to the country wearing it.
Macron might not have the sheer number of global heavyweights enjoyed by football’s biggest manufacturers, but releases like this certainly make the conversation more interesting.
