Animal-inspired football kits can be a risky business.
Lean too heavily into the concept and you end up with something bordering on costume territory. Play it too safe and the inspiration gets lost altogether.
The Richmond Kickers seem to have found a comfortable middle ground with the latest addition to their RVA Wildlife series.
This time, the spotlight falls on the Virginia opossum. Not necessarily the first animal most clubs would choose to build a football kit around, but perhaps that’s exactly why it works.

The club describes the marsupial as “affectionate and adorable, playful and weird, and fierce and feral”—a combination of traits that makes for a surprisingly interesting design brief.
Rather than covering the shirt in giant animal graphics, the design team have opted for a more measured approach. The heathered grey base takes inspiration from the opossum’s fur and provides texture without turning the shirt into a novelty piece.

The pink detailing is where the theme starts to reveal itself. The trim references the animal’s tail, while the collar nods towards its distinctive nose. They’re subtle touches that reward a second look rather than demanding attention immediately.
Then there are the illustrations.
Scattered throughout the design, small opossums wander across the shirt, adding a layer of personality that some supporters will absolutely love. Others may feel it’s the point where the kit crosses from clever tribute into something a little more playful than they’d typically wear.

That’s probably the central question here.
How much fun should a football shirt be allowed to have?
The launch photography certainly embraces the concept, placing the shirt within the kind of urban environments where opossums have become an unexpectedly familiar part of Richmond life.
What makes the release work is that it never feels like the animal was chosen at random. There’s a genuine connection between the city, the wildlife and the people who encounter it every day.

The result is a shirt that doesn’t take itself too seriously, while still feeling like a football kit first.
Would you wear a shirt covered in opossums?
Richmond seem to be betting that plenty of people will.
