Denmark have given us some truly iconic football shirts over the years.

From the unmistakable Hummel designs of the 1980s to their more recent understated creations, the Danes have rarely been afraid to do things differently.

Their latest effort might be one of their most fashionable yet.

Teaming up with Copenhagen streetwear label ALIS, Hummel and the Danish Football Association have unveiled Echoes of Denmark, a collaboration bringing football, fashion and Danish culture together.

And the resulting black and red national team shirt is quite something.

From the Streets of Copenhagen to the National Stage

ALIS have been part of Copenhagen’s streetwear scene for decades, building an identity around community, creativity and urban culture.

For this collaboration, they’ve joined forces with two equally recognisable names in Danish sport: Hummel and the DBU.

The idea is to bring together three different parts of Danish identity, recognising that the national team belongs just as much to the communities watching from the streets as it does to those inside the stadium.

It’s an interesting direction for an international football shirt, particularly one that will actually be worn by both the men’s and women’s national teams.

Black, Red and a Little Bit of Danish History

The shirt is dominated by a dramatic gradient, beginning with deep black across the shoulders before moving through darker shades of red towards the hem.

It’s a striking departure from Denmark’s familiar predominantly red shirts.

The brighter red piping across the shoulders and sides gives the design definition, while the black crew neck keeps things relatively simple.

The Danish crest sits alongside the Hummel and ALIS branding, with the largely monochrome treatment allowing the colour transition to take centre stage.

There’s a particularly interesting story behind that gradient too.

According to ALIS, the effect takes inspiration from an archival Danish football photograph, deliberately blurred until only its colours and grain remain.

It’s a clever way of incorporating football history without resorting to an obvious retro pattern or direct reproduction of an old shirt.

A memory of Danish football, translated into something entirely contemporary.

Is International Football Becoming Fashion’s New Playground?

Football and streetwear have been moving closer together for years, but collaborations of this kind feel particularly interesting when national teams are involved.

Club football has long embraced lifestyle collections, fashion labels and limited-edition releases.

International football, by comparison, has generally been more conservative.

There’s a national identity to protect, familiar colours to respect and generations of supporters who expect their country to look a certain way.

Denmark have found an appealing compromise.

The black and red palette still feels connected to the national team’s identity, but the execution gives the shirt a completely different personality.

It’s equally easy to imagine it being worn in Copenhagen’s streets as it is under the floodlights at Parken.

The shirt will make its on-pitch debut when Denmark’s men face Norway on 17 November 2026, before the women’s team wear it against Zambia on 5 December.

That makes this more than a fashion exercise.

It’s a genuine national team shirt, designed to perform on the pitch while reaching an audience beyond traditional football supporters.

And that brings us to a bigger question.

Are international football shirts becoming more fashionable than club shirts?

With collaborations like this, national teams have an opportunity to explore cultural identities that go far beyond the usual home and away colour schemes.

Denmark have certainly made a convincing case.

Black, red, a little football nostalgia and a healthy dose of Copenhagen street culture.

This one looks ready for the pitch and the pavement.
