You don’t need a Champions League budget to produce a Champions League-worthy football shirt.
Athens Kallithea have been proving that for several seasons now, and their latest collaboration with Kappa and Munich-based design studio Bureau Borsche is another example of a club that knows exactly what it wants to look like.
Black, gold and wonderfully understated.
Their new 2026/27 third shirt might just be one of the sharpest releases of the season.

Black Is Back
There’s no complicated graphic, no elaborate tribute to a local landmark and certainly no attempt to squeeze every design idea onto one shirt.
Instead, Athens Kallithea have gone almost entirely black.
The body carries a subtle satin-like finish, giving the material a little texture without distracting from its wonderfully clean appearance.
A traditional black collar blends neatly into the shirt, while metallic grey panels run beneath the arms and down the sides.
Thin white piping provides just enough contrast to break up the dark base.
It’s a relatively small detail, but it makes an enormous difference to the overall silhouette.

The gold detailing is equally effective.
Kappa’s famous Omini logo, the club’s minimalist AK monogram and the front-of-shirt branding all stand out against the black background.
There’s something particularly refreshing about that sponsor, too.
Rather than another gambling company or enormous commercial logo, Athens Kallithea continue to feature the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens, known as EMΣT.
It’s a partnership now in its fourth year, bringing another cultural dimension to a club already closely associated with art and design.

Five Stars, Sixty Years
Look above the club crest and you’ll notice five small gold stars.
They’re not there to celebrate league titles.
Athens Kallithea were founded in 1966 through the merger of five local clubs, and the stars commemorate those five founding organisations during the club’s 60th anniversary season.
It’s a lovely piece of symbolism.
A relatively understated detail carrying considerably more meaning than you might initially expect.

Straight Out of Kallithea
The launch campaign is another reason this release deserves attention.
Rather than turning towards an internationally recognised celebrity, the club have brought in Half Quickie, a rapper born in Kallithea and part of Athens’ underground hip-hop scene.
It’s a fitting choice for a shirt that feels just as comfortable in a music video as it would on a football pitch.
There’s an authenticity to the whole thing.
The club’s creative direction might attract admirers from around the world, but it remains closely connected to the neighbourhood it represents.
Are Smaller Clubs Leading Football Shirt Design?
Athens Kallithea aren’t alone in demonstrating that the most interesting football shirts don’t necessarily come from the biggest clubs.
Cesena recently produced another excellent example of black and gold done well, with a beautifully restrained Macron away shirt and an alternative seahorse crest.
You can read about that release here:
But Athens Kallithea have taken things further than simply producing an attractive shirt.
They’ve developed a recognisable visual identity.
From the styling of their campaigns to their relationship with art, music and fashion, there’s a consistency that many considerably larger clubs struggle to achieve.
It raises an interesting question.
Which smaller football club consistently produces better shirts than the giants of the game?
Athens Kallithea would surely feature in plenty of conversations.
There’s no shortage of big clubs releasing expensive shirts every season, but bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better.
Sometimes all you need is a black shirt, a few carefully considered details and the confidence to leave everything else alone.
Clean, mean and unmistakably Kallithea.
