Sound the Hummel horn.
Hummel really have got hankering for nostalgia, haven’t they, and why not when you can re-live historical classics and add plenty of twists to the tale to make them modern classics.
Same maker, new homage for Coventry this season – the pattern on the front and the top of the back (or the ‘back outer buggy’ according to the club site) takes inspiration from the 1992-94 shirt this time, and nails it.
The collar is unusual in design but is carried-off by the navy colour, linked nicely with the Hummel chevrons and logo. There’s also links to the club crest (elephant’s head on the back), the Coventry City strapline (‘We Are Strong’ on the inner hem), and double the detail inside the neck with SKY BLUE ARMY written inside below PUSB taping. Just no stone left unturned by Coventry and Hummel, much like the latter’s Bristol City home shirt this season.
As often seems to be the case at the moment, the mucky fingerprints of gambling are to the detriment of something otherwise lovely – our good friends at Boylesports are back to remind us that ‘This is Betting’. Poor Coventry not only having to share a stadium with Birmingham, but also a sponsor.
Annoyingly, the shirt is designed to house a sponsor, so the junior version just looks like it’s missing one. Putting those disappointments to one side, there is something else about this shirt that really warms cockles of my neutral heart… it’s available in long sleeves! You just don’t see that much these days – well played, Cummel.
